Overview

Community Medical Services (CMS) is hiring a Specimen Processor. Under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Operations, the Specimen Processor performs a multi-disciplinary role comprised of three primary components: specimen accessioning/processing, sample splitting/sorting, and data entry.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares laboratory specimens for designated analysis and testing and routes specimens to the staging area
  • Completes all paperwork and technical/non-technical procedures required to process and submit specimens for internal and external clients
  • Assigns specific computer-generated identification numbers, checks for accuracy, and records all items processed
  • Operates data entry terminals and automated data systems, follows standard sequences/coding when entering data and corrects, edits, and verifies data entered into automated systems
  • Performs specimen audits to resolve outstanding problems
  • Performs general housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain the integrity of the laboratory
  • Adheres to all federal, state, local, and accrediting body regulations

Qualifications

Education, Certification and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 1-3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred
  • Certification as a medical laboratory assistant preferred
  • Some medical knowledge or experience preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail
  • Problem solving, conflict resolution, and strong customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly
  • Passion, humility, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
  • Adheres to and enforces company policies and procedures

Tools and Equipment Requirements

  • The ability to use a phone, computer, printer, and copier is required.
  • Frequent use of Microsoft office products, including but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • The ability to use the internet and various web browser software is required.
  • Operation of pipetting devices to manipulate clinical specimens
  • Proper use of personal protective equipment

Physical Working Conditions

  • Requires sitting and standing associated with a laboratory environment.
  • Manual dexterity using a computer keyboard and the ability to manipulate clinical specimens with many fine movements.
  • Requires prolonged sitting and standing, frequent bending, stooping, or stretching.
  • Requires occasional use of fax machines, telephones, copiers, and other office equipment.
  • Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Properly mitigated risk of exposure to physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
