Overview

The Counselor Intern will be currently enrolled in a graduate program, have a passion for addiction treatment, have an interest in helping those who are economically disadvantaged and be willing to be trained. Work is performed under the supervision of the Clinical Director. The Counselor Intern is responsible for providing specialized individual and group therapies for those clients whose diagnosis includes the presence of drug abuse or dependence diagnosis. He or she is also responsible for conducting Chemical Dependency Evaluations and working closely with other treatment team members to address the client’s drug issues.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize independent judgment, strong initiative, and decision
  • Discusses with clients relapse warning signs and relapse prevention techniques and strategies and develops plans
    accordingly
  • Shares pertinent information with team as obtained from clients or family throughout program
  • Provides pertinent client information based on chemical dependency evaluation, and group and individual session
    interactions, to assist in the client treatment process
  • The position is required to maintain confidential information in accordance with the HIPPA, Information Security Policy, Protocols, Procedures and CFR-42
  • Expected to communicate in a courteous manner at all times
  • Conducts primarily individual sessions
  • Responsible for the completion of projects in timely manner
  • Maintain charts/files/records
  • Participate in staff meetings and clinical meetings weekly
  • Make independent decisions in the processing of routine correspondence, investigate subject matter and prepares the response
  • Responsible for providing outpatient, individual, group, and family supportive counseling services to clients.
  • Chart progress maintains clinical records and ensures implementation of treatment.
  • Monitors and follows up on client needs, completes re-assessments as required.
  • Coordinates services as necessary working in collaboration with case managers, medical providers and other clinic staff.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Must be working towards CADC license with the state of Illinois
  • Must have degree in Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work or related field
  • Must have and maintain registered internship status
  • Competence with completing necessary paperwork on time, providing insurance/probation updates, meeting deadlines, and attending weekly clinical supervision meetings are required
  • Demonstrated understanding of addiction, psychiatric illness and its treatment.
  • Ability to interact and communicate both verbally and in writing with those struggling with addiction, other staff, physicians, agencies, other health care providers and the public
  • Excellent typing, computer, filing and writing skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to visually and audibly assess the mental status, behavior
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the full continuum of care
  • A minimum of 2 years experience preferred with chemical dependency and/or dual diagnosed clients, in an in or out-patient setting.

 

Tools and Equipment Requirements

  • The ability to use a phone, computer, printer, and copier is required.
  • Frequent use of Microsoft office products, including but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • The ability to use the internet and various web browser software is required.

 

Physical Working Conditions and Office Setting Description

  • Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.
  • Manual dexterity using a calculator and computer keyboard.
  • Requires prolonged sitting, standing, frequent bending, stooping, or stretching.
  • Some lifting may be required.
  • Frequent and prolonged typing and frequent and prolonged operation of computer, keyboard, and telephones required.
  • Requires occasional use of fax machines, telephones, copiers, and other office equipment.
  • Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
